“We are born to roam”
Those are the words written on one of my favorite T-shirts. I find myself grabbing it anytime we are going to travel. It is a powerful statement that really resonates.
“We are born to roam”
What are the implications of this statement if it is indeed true? How does it apply to our work habits and our wellness habits? Quite a bit.
Our bodies are made to be in motion and be active. In this day and age we have developed so many advancements that have sabotaged this. Fast Food in the name of efficiency. Anxiety and weight loss medicines in the name of instant results. Creature comforts (too many to list) in the name of ease & convenience. In fact, it has become totally possible to work remotely for many of us. So many of us stay at home and mostly exist only at home. We get cozy and comfortable in our own bubbles that require less activity and interaction. From this humble opinion, it feels like these solutions may be playing a hand in creating a less resilient and unhealthy person.
Human beings are so advanced in so many ways, yet we seem to be masters of self sabotage.
“We are born to roam”
Consistent movement. Could that be the simple key? YES.
Being on the go allows us to interact in person with others. Being on the go allows us to interact with and pull inspiration from various surroundings. Being on the go allows us to smell, feel, hear all sorts of soothing natural wonders. From the birds chirping to the gentle breeze cooling us as the sun's rays give us some sweet vitamins. Few things seem to help me in times of stress/anxiety like going outside for a roam. In this day and age, let’s embrace our innovations and use them in cohesion with the fact that “We are born to roam”.
Here is one thought.
Let’s eliminate the idea of working and living only in “comfortable” yet isolating home bubbles. And in doing so, we don’t have to require office hours or punching in the clock. Give team members clear work objectives with timelines and then give them the time and freedom to go roam and achieve. As I type this, I am laying in the grass (on a picnic blanket) in a park I rarely roam to. I have my to dos, I brought lunch from home, and I have never felt more productive and felt so well while being productive.
“We are born to roam”
Let’s embrace it and use it as a satisfyingly productive way to live out a day.
